Capsule Size Matters.
Different capsule sizes provide different amounts of space. Actual capacity also depends on the density, particle size, and physical characteristics of the powder.
At our facility, Size 0 and Size 00 capsules are commonly used with approximate reference fill weights of 500 mg and 690 mg, respectively.
Size 0
Approx. 500 mg*
Commonly used for lower-volume formulas.
Size 00
Approx. 690 mg*
Useful for formulas containing more ingredients or larger powder volume.
*Approximate reference fill weights, not fixed capacities. Actual fill weight varies by formulation and powder characteristics. Illustrations are not to scale.
Why Can a Formula Need More Space?
Complex supplements may combine vitamins, minerals, botanical extracts, amino acids, and other functional ingredients in one serving.
More Ingredients Can Mean More Powder.
When a formula contains many active ingredients, the total amount of powder can increase. A larger capsule may allow the desired formula to fit without unnecessarily increasing the number of capsules per day.
Raw Material Strength Can Vary.
Some botanical extracts are standardized to a specific active compound. If an ingredient contains a lower percentage of the target active, more raw material may be needed to deliver the intended amount.
Label Amount ≠ Raw Material Weight.
A simple example explains why the numbers can be different.
If a raw material contains 50% of the target active compound:
100 mg target active ÷ 50% active
= 200 mg raw material
The additional raw material is used to deliver the intended active amount—not simply to add filler.
How Should You Choose?
There is no universally better capsule size. The right choice depends on the formula and your personal preference.
When a Smaller Capsule May Suit You.
You prefer a smaller capsule to swallow, and the formula can deliver its intended ingredients without requiring too many capsules per day.
When a Larger Capsule May Suit You.
A larger capsule may accommodate more powder per capsule and, depending on the formula and labeled directions, fewer capsules per day. Size alone does not establish potency.
Don’t judge a supplement by capsule size alone.
Check the Supplement Facts, serving size, active ingredients, and directions first. Then consider the capsule size that feels comfortable for you.
Bigger Capsule ≠ More Fillers.
When developing a supplement, we balance formula potency, capsule count, powder characteristics, blend uniformity, and manufacturing stability.
What matters is what’s inside.
